These are the few things we think everybody should know before traveling to Tulum.
- Distances: Tulum is roughly 90 mins to 2 hrs. (by car) from the Cancun Airport.
- Language: Spanish and (sometimes broken) English.
- Currency: Mexican pesos. Some places accept USD, but the exchange rate will not be the best.
- Money: Most places accept Visa and Mastercard, American Express acceptance may be less common.
That being said, you will need cash for taxis and some cash only smaller shops. There are many ATMs around Tulum.
- Power Plug: Mexico uses the same power plug as North America. So, you will not need a travel adapter if you are from Canada or the USA.
- Safety: Tulum is a generally safe place for travelers, but it’s always important to take common sense precautions.
- Must packs: Sunscreen and insect repellent.
- Climate: Warm all year long. Wet season between June and October.
- Internet: The internet infrastructure in Tulum has been improving over the years, but it’s important to note that it may not be as fast as in larger cities or more developed areas.
- Visa: Citizens of 65 countries do not need a visa to visit Tulum and can stay up to 180 days. More info on the official government website.
